Diamondbacks release pitcher Grimsley in midst of drug probe

PHOENIX, United States (AFP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have released relief pitcher Jason Grimsley, in the midst of a doping probe, at the player's own request.

Federal investigators searched Grimsley's Scottsdale, Arizona, home for six hours Tuesday as part of an investigation of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball.

The Arizona Republic newspaper reported on its website that Grimsley admitted to taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs and also claimed there was wide usage throughout the game.

According to the report, Grimsley said that amphetamines were used like "aspirin" in major league clubhouses.

The newspaper also obtained an affidavit filed by the lead federal investigator in baseball's steroids probe.
