Selig slams players who use performance-enhancers

MAMARONECK, United States (AFP) — In an open letter to baseball fans published in five major publications, Major League commissioner Bud Selig slammed drug cheats and vowed to protect the integrity of the game.

Selig's move came five days after former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jason Grimsley was hit with a 50-game suspension after admitting to taking performance-enhancing drugs, including human growth hormone.

Major League Baseball suspended Grimsley under a clause of its new steroid policy, making the righthander the first major leaguer to be banned without failing a drug test.

Federal investigators had searched Grimsley's home in Scottsdale, Arizona last Tuesday as part of an investigation into doping in the sport.
