Annan in Ivory Coast to push for polls this year

ABIDJAN (AFP) — UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was to arrive in Ivory Coast to urge that delayed elections be held to boost the west African country's fragile peace process.
Travelling here for the first time since a foiled coup against President Laurent Gbagbo divided the country in two, Annan is accompanied by African heavyweights who have played critical mediation roles in recent months to get the peace deal moving.
Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, who is also the current chair of the African Union, and Mamadou Tandja of Niger, the head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will attend the talks.
Annan intends on Thursday to continue his consultations with Gbagbo which began on Saturday on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) summit in Gambia.
