Palestinian PM slams 'collective punishment'

GAZA CITY (AFP) — Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniya has slammed an Israeli offensive as "collective punishment" against the Palestinians and demanded the international community intervene to end it.

"What Israel is doing is exposing its plan to reoccupy large sectors of the Gaza Strip, strike its infrastructure, impose collective punishment on our people and throw them into a state of panic," Haniya said in a statement.

"The crimes committed by Israel will transform into failure and confusion but only strengthen the Palestinian people's unity," he added.

Israel has waged a massive assault on the Gaza Strip in general and Haniya's Hamas-led government in particular following the capture on June 25 of an Israeli soldier by Palestinian commandos,...
