BEIJING (AFP) — An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale shook a sparsely populated area in northwest China, state media has reported.

The epicenter of the tremor, which struck Wednesday afternoon at 5:53 pm (0953 GMT), was in Yushu county in Qinghai province, the Xinhua news agency said, citing the China Seismological Bureau.

The same area was hit by a magnitude 5.0 quake on Tuesday, Xinhua said, adding neither event had led to immediate reports of casualties.
