Rib injury lands Red Sox hurler Wakefield on DL

BOSTON, United States (AFP) — Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield was placed on the disabled list by the Boston Red Sox with a rib cage injury.

The Red Sox placed the veteran righthander on the 15-day DL retroactive to Tuesday.

The Boston Globe reported on Thursday that Wakefield will be sidelined for at least three weeks with a stress fracture in the rib cage.

"I think there's a chance we could have him back with us, best-case scenario, three weeks," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "That's if the stars align, and I think four weeks is probably more what we're looking at."

Wakefield left Monday's game against Kansas City after just four innings due to pain in the rib cage area.
