LONDON (AFP) — Veteran British yachtsman Tony Bullimore has said he will attempt to beat the world record set by Ellen MacArthur for sailing non-stop and single-handed around the world.

Bullimore, 67, will try to better the record of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 35 seconds set by MacArthur in February last year in her trimaran B and Q.

Bullimore is famous for being rescued from the Southern Ocean in 1996 during the Vendee Globe solo non-stop race, when his keel broke off and his boat capsized.

He was eventually picked up by the Australian Navy after spending several days in his capsized hull in freezing conditions.
