MONTREAL (AFP) — World number one Amelie Mauresmo of France has pulled out of the WTA tournament here next week due to a shoulder injury and 12th-ranked Venus Williams will also miss the event, organizers said.
Mauresmo has not played since winning at Wimbledon last month and would have only one week before the US Open to attempt any sort of warm-up matches before the year's final Grand Slam tournament begins at New York.
"I'm very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup because of a right shoulder strain that I sustained while preparing for the tournament," Mauresmo said in a statement released by the organizers.
"I am working hard to rehabilitate to get back on court as soon as possible."
