WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States welcomed the Israeli and Lebanese government's acceptance of a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ending the month-long hostilities between Israel and the Hezbollah militia.
Israel said it would stop the offensive at 8:00 am (0500 GMT) Monday as part of a United Nations agreed truce in line with Security Council Resolution 1701, passed unanimously on Friday after weeks of diplomatic wrangling.
The resolution calls for a full cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah to be followed by the deployment of a 15,000-strong international force in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese government, which includes two ministers from the Hezbollah movement fighting Israel, also approved the resolution on Saturday.
