James, Wade and Anthony named US captains at world hoop event

SAPPORO, Japan (AFP) — LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, who played on the 2004 US Olympic team, and Dwyane Wade of the National Basketball Association champion Miami Heat were named US World Championships captains.

The trio, all among the top five selections in the 2003 NBA Draft, will try to spark the Americans back to the top of the basketball world when the 24-nation event begins Saturday in Japan.

James and Anthony spent most of their time on the bench in 2004 watching more senior NBA talent struggle to a bronze-medal finish.

"To not have had the best experience in 2004 and to now be the captain on the 2006 World Championship team, well, this means a lot," James said.
