Shoulder surgery to sideline Hurricanes' Stillman

RALEIGH, United States (AFP) — Stanley Cup champions Carolina will launch their defence of the National Hockey League crown without second-leading scorer Cory Stillman.

The left wing had surgery on his right shoulder on Friday and is expecte dto miss three to four months.

The Hurricanes are hoping Stillman can return by late November.

When the Hurricanes beat the Edmonton Oilers in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals in June, Stillman became the sixth player in NHL history to win consecutive Stanley Cups with different teams.

He was with the Tampa Bay Lightning when they won their first championship in 2003-04. A labor dispute eradicated the 2004-05 season.
