Opium could bring Afghanistan down again: US official

KABUL (AFP) — Opium could destroy Afghanistan and return it to being a haven for terrorism, a US counter-narcotics official said as the United Nations was expected to announce a jump in opium production here. A "narco-economy" was already in place and the drugs trade could cause the fragile country to collapse into the chaos that sheltered the Al-Qaeda network blamed for the September 11 attacks, the US official on drugs control said.
