Greek police stumped by bulldozer bank robbery on Crete

HANIA, Greece (AFP) — Police on the Greek island of Crete are hunting a gang of robbers that used an entire depot's worth of stolen heavy-duty vehicles to raid a bank near the town of Hania, making off with 200,000 euros (257,000 dollars). With the use of a bulldozer, the gang broke into the bank at the coastal resort of Kalyves early Monday, wrenched free the safe and transferred it to a truck before escaping.

Responding police units were unable to make contact with the robbers, who had blocked surrounding access roads with two cement mixers. A single squad car that reached the scene was soon immobilised when the robbers fired at its tyres. The getaway truck was later found burned.
