Alonso called to see stewards

MONZA, Italy (AFP) — Defending drivers world champion Fernando Alonso of Spain has been called to see the stewards at the Italian Grand Prix after it was alleged that he blocked rival Brazilian Felipe Massa during qualifying. Title-race leader Alonso, in his Renault, endured a difficult problem-hit session in which he suffered a high-speed puncture and tyre blow-out.

He qualified fifth while his main rival Michael Schumacher took second place on the grid for Ferrari. Alonso leads Schumacher by 12 points in the title battle with four races remaining, starting with Sunday's Italian showdown after which it is widely expected that Schumacher, 37, will confirm his intention to retire at the end of the year.
