Georgia says Russia overplaying its hand in spy row

TBILISI (AFP) — A defiant president Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia has said Russia is overplaying its hand in an escalating diplomatic crisis over Tbilisi's arrest of four Russian officers. "I don't think this is serious. They are overplaying," a spokesman quoted Saakashvili as saying, following Russian President Vladimir Putin's characterization of the arrest as "an act of state terrorism." "They have become hostages to their own propaganda," Saakashvili said, adding that he ruled out the possibility of Russia's using of military force against Georgia.
"I don't they would be so unreasonable as to use military force," Saakashvili said. Russia has suggested that the arrest of its officers was tantamount to open hostility and has evacuated its embassy staff in Georgia while saying it was prepared to use force.
