Bulgaria seeks to contain Danube fuel oil spill

SOFIA (AFP) — Bulgarian authorities are seeking to contain a fuel oil spill which is leaking into the Danube river from neighbouring Romania and Serbia. "Polluted waters keep entering the Bulgarian part of the Danube ... fuel oil patches have spanned over 100 kilometers (62 miles)" along the river, rescue services spokesman Hristian Kirilov said Tuesday in Vidin, the first Bulgarian town down the Danube.
The oil spill entered Bulgaria on Monday, prompting Environment and Waters Minister Dzhevdet Chakarov to request authorities in 12 countries along the Danube and its tributaries to find and contain the source of the pollution. But there was still no official answer early Tuesday. The polluted waters were meanwhile approaching the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, which is situated further down the Danube and uses river water to cool its reactors.
