Report highlights lack of surveillance over US prisoners' mail

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US federal prison system is not equipped to effectively screen the mail that the country's most dangerous inmates exchange with the outside world, the Justice Department's inspector general warned in a new report. The report, released Tuesday, drew its conclusions from an investigation in 2005, when the media revealed that three prisoners jailed for the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993 had sent 90 letters from prison to Islamists abroad.
