Security Council set to weigh sanctions against Iran next week

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — The UN Security Council is expected to begin discussions next week on a resolution to impose sanctions on Iran for its failure to halt uranium enrichment, Britain's UN envoy said. "I expect the Iranian dossier to reemerge in New York in the course of next week," Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry said following a fruitless, months-long effort to negotiate a resolution of the crisis with Iran.
He said Britain "will be discussing with its partners and with members of the council the basis for action by the council to adopt measures under Article 41 against Iran." Article 41 of the UN Charter allows the Security Council to impose diplomatic and economic sanctions on member nations to enforce compliance with its resolutions.
