Northwest airlines orders 72 jets from Bombardier and Embraer

CHICAGO (AFP) — Northwest Airlines announced it had ordered 72 region jets as it restructures its operations in order to emerge from bankruptcy protection. The US airline split its order evenly between Canada's Bombardier and Brazil's Embraer, placing firm orders for 36 Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet 900s and 36 Embraer 175s.

"Today's orders are examples of the steady progress we are making in our restructuring which is focused on resizing and optimizing the Northwest fleet to better serve customers; realizing competitive labor and non-labor costs; and restructuring and recapitalizing the airline's balance sheet," Doug Steenland, Northwest president and chief executive, said in a statement.
