DETROIT, United States (AFP) — General Motors Corp. reported a three percent drop in third-quarter global sales despite a strong showing in overseas markets such as China and Russia where it is now the top automaker. GM said it sold a total of 2.3 million vehicles worldwide during the third quarter with its Chevrolet brand posting double-digit sales increases across Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin American.
So far this year, GMs overall sales are down 2.5 percent at 6.894 million units as it battles it out with Toyota of Japan for the title of the world's largest automaker. GM officials said the three-percent decrease during the third quarter was mainly due to a drop in sales in North America where the company has reduced deliveries to daily rental fleets.
