Anglo American appoints first female chief executive

LONDON (AFP) — Global mining giant Anglo American has appointed Cynthia Carroll as its chief executive, the first time it has picked both a woman and outsider to run the 89-year-old company. US-citizen Carroll, 49, will succeed Tony Trahar on March 1, 2007, Anglo American said in a statement on Tuesday.

Trahar had previously announced his intention to retire from Anglo American, which is registered in Britain but operates mainly in South Africa. Carroll joins Anglo American after 18 years in the aluminium industry with Alcan, including five as president and chief executive of its primary metals arm.
