Jones to lead Wales in World Cup

CARDIFF (AFP) — Stephen Jones will captain Wales through the 2007 Rugby World Cup, it has been announced. The Llanelli fly-half, who returned to Wales this season after a spell with French club Clermont Auvergne, takes over as skipper with immediate effect in place of Gareth Thomas, who is still in France with Toulouse.

Jones, capped 56 times, will lead Wales in their opening November interantional against Australia at the Millennium Stadium a week on Saturday. The 28-year-old No 10, who captained Wales against England three years ago, said: "This is a great honour for myself, my club and my family and I am grateful to Gareth and the management team for giving me the opportunity to lead my country.
