Hirvonen in control of Rally Australia

PERTH, Australia (AFP) — Finland's Mikki Hirvonen extended his lead in Rally Australia, boosting Ford's chances of claiming the manufacturers' title with two races to go. After the second leg in Perth and with just six stages remaining on Sunday, Hirvonen held a commanding 32.3 second lead over Norway's Petter Solberg in a Subaru, with Austrian Manfred Stohl (Peugeot) more than two minutes back in third.

The championship hopes of Hirvonen's Ford team-mate, Marcus Gronholm, have all but disappeared after he rolled his car on Friday, although he won five stages on Saturday to climb up to seventh position overall and fifth in the WRC class.
