WWF urges drastic action to save Mediterranean tuna

ZAGREB (AFP) — The environmental group WWF urged the global body in charge of tuna conservation to take drastic measures to prevent the extinction of the Mediterranean's bluefin tuna. "Drastic measures are needed to save bluefin tuna from commercial and biological extinction in the Mediterranean" which would also endanger the wider marine ecosystem, the WWF warned in a statement.
The tuna is subject to "massive illegal overfishing in the Mediterranean", it said, ahead of a meeting of the 42-nation International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), responsible for regulating the fishery.
