Wild elephants crush four Indians to death

GUWAHATI, India (AFP) — Four people have been trampled to death by wild elephants in India's northeastern state of Assam in the latest in a series of attacks on humans. A dozen elephants rushed a group of woodcutters Thursday in a dense jungle area in eastern Assam, about 145 kilometres (90 miles) from the main city of Guwahati.

"The herd chased the woodcutters and literally tore apart two of them," in the Salna reserved forest, wildlife official A. Das told AFP. Two other people were killed the same day by elephants in Bihali village in northern Assam. "The herd entered the village and smashed several huts before trampling to death two persons," the official said. Forest rangers chased the herd away using firecrackers.
