Nouzaret to coach Guinea

CONAKRY (AFP) — Frenchman Robert Nouzaret has been named coach of Guinea in succession to compatriot Patrice Neveu, the national football association said. Neveu quit last month after the west African country made a disappointing start to the 2008 African Nations Cup qualifying competition, drawing at home to Algeria and losing away to Cape Verde Islands.

Guinea, quarter-finalists in the 2004 and 2006 editions of the biennial Nations Cup, travel to Gambia in late March and another defeat would virtually end hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Ghana. Nouzaret, 63, is no stranger to west Africa having coached Ivory Coast for 18 months from mid-2002 and he also worked with leading Algerian club Mouloudia Alger. © 2006 AFP
