Knight matches all–time US college hoop win mark

LUBBOCK, United States (AFP) — Bob Knight matched Dean Smith for the most coaching victories in US college basketball history with his 879th triumph when his Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated Bucknell 72-60. The controversial 66-year-old coach, in his 41st season, improved to 879-353. Knight began his career at the US Military Academy and made his fame at Indiana, guiding the Hoosiers to US titles in 1976, 1981 and 1987.

Knight, who also coached the 1984 US Olympic team to gold at Los Angeles, will have his first chance to take sole possession of the mark here on Thursday when the Red Raiders, 10-3, host Nevada-Las Vegas.
