Beards back with a bang in Belfast

BELFAST (AFP) — The gentlemen of Northern Ireland are being urged to turn the other cheek on their razors and start the New Year by growing the most splendid beard possible in the name of manliness. Bearduary Belfast 2007 marks Northern Ireland's first foray into a growing global movement which encourages men to grow beards during the chilly months of January and February.

The event kicks off on January 1 and participants have to post weekly pictures of their efforts on the competitors' website. A shaving ceremony will be held on March 2 when a prize will be awarded to owner of the beard judged the most creative.
