Once–promising NBA player Williams waived by development team

AUSTIN, United States (AFP) — Jay Williams, trying to revive a once promising pro basketball career disrupted by a motorcycle crash, was waived by the National Basketball Association Development League's Austin Toros. Williams, nearly lost his leg in a motorcycle accident on June 19, 2003, was originally signed by the Toros on December 8.

He averaged 6.0 points, 5.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds in three games with the team. Williams was invited to training camp with the New Jersey Nets this season but was waived October 22 after averaging 3.8 points in five preseason games. Williams led Duke University to the 2001 national championship and won the Naismith and Wooden Awards as the best college basketball player before heading for the NBA.
