Toyota to supply small cars for Subaru's European operations

TOKYO (AFP) — Japanese automaking giant Toyota Motor Corp will start producing this year small passenger cars for Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd -- the maker of the Subaru brand of vehicles. Toyota, in a move to solidify its relations with Fuji Heavy, will use a manufacturing base of subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co to produce the Passo, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Wednesday.

Fuji Heavy will sell the cars in Europe, which is set to introduce stricter emissions regulations in 2008. Fast-expanding Toyota took an 8.7 percent stake in Fuji Heavy in 2005 as struggling US giant General Motors exited the group. © 2007 AFP
