Man found dead in ETA airport blast in Spain

MADRID (AFP) — Hopes for peace over Spain's troubled Basque region suffered a fresh blow when authorities confirmed at least one person was killed in Saturday's Madrid airport blast, the first lethal attack by the armed Basque separatist group ETA since 2003. As Madrid and Basque authorities announced a day of mourning, the interior ministry told AFP firefighters had reached the shattered wreck of Carlos Alonso Palate's car and identified the remains of the 35-year-old Ecuadorian construction worker who lived in the southeastern city of Valencia.

"Firefighters have found the remains of Carlos Alonso Palate", the ministry said, confirming the first ETA-related death since May 30, 2003. A second Ecuadorian man, 19-year-old Diego Armando Estacio Civizapa, remains missing, presumed dead. The blast also slightly injured 19 people.
