Thomas's rugby career in doubt after ban

CARDIFF (AFP) — Gareth Thomas's hopes of bowing out from international rugby at the World Cup were cast into doubt after Wales officials decided they would not challenge their former captain's four-week ban.

The 32-year-old Thomas, capped 90 times by Wales, was found guilty of misconduct by a three-man committee following his part in an angry exchange with Ulster fans while playing for club side Toulouse in a European Cup tie at the French club's ground on January 21.

He admitted to flicking his middle finger at Ulster supporters during the match and was also found guilty of attempting to jump into the crowd.

It would have been an astonishing lapse, by rugby union standards, from a schoolboy player.
