Disgraced Australian Olympic kayaker on drugs charges

SYDNEY (AFP) — An Australian Olympic kayaker already banned for using steroids faces a possible jail term after allegedly being caught with more than 800 ecstasy tablets this week.

Dual Olympic silver medallist and former world champion kayaker Nathan Baggaley appeared at Southport Magistrates Court in Queensland state Tuesday on a range of charges, including possession of a dangerous drug.

Prosecutors alleged Baggaley, 31, and a 19-year-old accomplice were caught with the ecstasy, an unspecified white powder and cannabis when officers searched their car on Monday night on the Gold Coast tourist strip.

Baggaley did not enter a plea to the charges and is scheduled to reappear in court on April 5.
