Young gun Gomez makes mark for Germany

DUSSELDORF, Germany (AFP) — Mario Gomez announced himself as a star of the future when he made a goal-scoring international debut as Germany easily overcame Switzerland 3-1 in a friendly.

The 21-year-old Stuttgart striker, the top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 11 goals, found the net on the half-hour mark as Germany warmed up for their crucial Euro 2008 qualifying match against the Czech Republic next month in style.

Also on the scoresheet was Kevin Kuryani, making his first appearance for 15 months after missing out on the World Cup, while Torsten Frings hit the third with a freekick.

"We played very well in the first 60 minutes with some good combinations, we were compact and well-organised," said Germany coach Joachim Low.
