Animal rights group pleads to spare pigs

SINGAPORE (AFP) — Celebrate the Year of the Pig, but please don't eat Porky.

That was the message Tuesday from a leading animal rights group, which praised the pig and urged Lunar New Year celebrants not to eat the beasts.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said pigs are highly intelligent, sensitive and very clean creatures which do not deserve to be killed and eaten.

"Pigs dream, enjoy listening to soothing music and, when they are given the chance, establish complex social structures -- much like humans do," the group said in a statement.

Millions of ethnic Chinese across Asia will say goodbye to the Year of the Dog and welcome the Year of the Pig when Lunar New Year celebrations begin on Sunday.
