Apologetic Waltrip makes Daytona field in backup car

DAYTONA BEACH, United States (AFP) — Michael Waltrip qualified a Toyota backup car for Sunday's Daytona 500, hours after he apologized for the cheating scandal that has spoiled Toyota's stock car debut.

A mysterious substance, possibly the rocket fuel propylene oxide, was found in the intake manifold of Waltrip's Toyota after last Sunday's qualifying for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) season opener.

Waltrip's car was thrown out and he lost 100 points in the driver's race while his team was fined and crew chief, David Hyder, and competition vice president Bobby Kennedy, faced indefinite suspensions.

But Waltrip finished eighth in a 60-lap last-chance qualifying race Thursday to claim a berth in NASCAR's showcase spectacle.
