British grocer Asda to create 8,000 jobs in 2007

LONDON (AFP) — British food retailer Asda, owned by US group Wal-Mart, said Wednesday it would create 8,000 jobs and build 18 new supermarkets across Britain this year.

Asda added that it would carry out "major extensions and improvements" to 15 of its existing supermarkets as well as rolling out its non-food format "Asda Living" to a further 10 sites within the next 12 months.

This would bring to 28 the total number of new stores being built by early 2008.

The first Living sites were set to open in Belfast later this week and in Oldham, northwest England, in April.
