MEMPHIS, United States (AFP) — Defending men's champion Tommy Haas of Germany and women's top seed Shahar Peer of Israel advanced in straight sets at the 865,000-dollar ATP and WTA hardcourt tournament here Friday

Second seed Haas eliminated US wild card Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-2 to book a semi-final date with another American, fourth seed Mardy Fish, who advanced when leading 6-2, 4-1 when Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili retired due to illness.

The Russian became the third player this week to quit a match due to stomach trouble in a town known for barbecue and hometown music legend Elvis Presley's fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
