Stars light up Oscars red carpet as ceremony nears

HOLLYWOOD (AFP) — The world's greatest catwalk show got underway here Sunday as a galaxy of stars descended on the Oscars red carpet with just over an hour to go until the 79th Academy Awards.

An overcast sky and a chilly breeze greeted the first of an estimated 3,400 VIPs who will attend the ceremony at the Kodak Theatre, which gets underway at around 5:00 pm (0100 GMT).

Among the first wave of VIPs and celebrities to arrive were two-time best actress Oscar winner Jodie Foster and former 2000 US presidential election candidate Al Gore, the star of documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

Best supporting actress nominees Jennifer Hudson of "Dreamgirls" and Japanese starlet Rinko Kikuchi of "Babel" and French legend Catherine Deneuve were also among the early...
