RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) — Veteran World Cup winner Romario is closing in on his 1,000th career goal after grabbing a brace in a Brazilian Cup game.
Romario scored two of his side Vasco de Gama's six goals in cup match against Fast Clube to move to within eight goals of his target.
The 41-year-old Brazilian started the match and scored his first two minutes before half time, adding his second with a quarter of an hour to play.
Romario's figure of 992 goals is his own calculation and has not been ratified by world football's governing body FIFA.
He returned to Vasco for the fourth time at the beginning of the year and began his Romario 1,000 Project, his quest to score 1,000 goals before retiring.
