BAGHDAD (AFP) — Iraqi civilians were marginally safer in February than in the month before, official casualty figures showed Thursday, despite the spate of car bombings in reaction to a US-led security operation.

According to figures compiled by the Iraqi defence, interior and health ministries and seen by AFP, at least 1,646 non-combatants were killed by Iraq's warring factions last month, down eight percent on January's toll.

At the same time, however, casualties among the beleaguered Iraqi security forces were up sharply, with around twice as many police and soldiers killed, in a sign that insurgents are far from defeated.
