Vietnam confiscates toxic lipsticks, foods

HANOI (AFP) — Vietnamese officials Wednesday moved to confiscate and destroy Chinese-made lipsticks, cosmetics and food products containing Sudan Red, an industrial dye linked to cancer.

The health ministry's drug administration Tuesday ordered all provinces to destroy the products by April 15, after Chinese lipstick brands containing the dye were found in markets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this month.

Deputy Health Minister Cao Minh Quang said his ministry was determined to recover and destroy all cosmetics, eggs and chili products containing Sudan Red and other harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, said state media.

Hanoi health watchdogs Wednesday began a mass inspection for chili products in markets, which are rife with smuggled goods from China....
