Two Italian hostages freed in Nigeria

LAGOS (AFP) — An armed group in southern Nigeria released two Italians it had been holding hostage since December on Thursday but vowed to abduct other oil workers.

"Today .. we released the Italians Cosma Russo and Franco Arena, captured in the December 7, 2006 raid on the Agip terminal in Brass", the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said in an email sent to AFP.

The Italian news agency ANSA said the release of the men, both employees of Italian oil company Agip, was confirmed by the Italian foreign ministry.

"They were handed over to the custody of Massimo Alberizzi, an Italian journalist visiting in the Niger Delta, who in turn handed these individuals over to officials of Saipem, a subsidiary of Agip", MEND's email said.
