British broadcaster must apologise over Shetty race row

LONDON (AFP) — A British broadcaster embroiled in a racist bullying row involving Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on a reality television show was ordered Thursday to make an unprecedented series of on-air apologies.
Britain's communications watchdog Ofcom found Channel 4 guilty of "serious editorial misjudgement" over incidents in "Celebrity Big Brother" in January which sparked more than 40,000 viewer complaints and angry protests in India.
In the first such sanction ever imposed on a British public service broadcaster, Ofcom ordered Channel 4 to screen three separate apologies when a new non-celebrity series of "Big Brother" begins next week.
