US sees NKorea funds deal within weeks

MANILA (AFP) — The United States' top negotiator with North Korea said Friday he was optimistic of a deal within a month over frozen funds that have blocked an agreement to end Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme.

US envoy Christopher Hill told reporters he had "exchanged notes" on the issue with Jong Song-Il, the North Korean vice foreign minister attending a meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Manila late Thursday.

The communist state has refused to honour a pledge to shut down and seal its Yongbyon nuclear reactor until it gets back 25 million dollars in funds that have been frozen in the Banco Delta Asia (BDA) in Macau.

The money was held after Washington blacklisted the bank for allegedly laundering illicit North Korean funds.
