Japanese emperor visits Oxford university

OXFORD, England (AFP) — Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the historic University of Oxford on Monday during their three-day tour of Britain.

The royals met students and the university's chancellor Chris Patten -- the last colonial governor of Hong Kong.

They smiled as they sheltered under umbrellas as they toured Trinity College as rain fell on the southern English city.

The Japanese imperial family already has strong links with Oxford.

Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, Prince Akishino and Prince Tomohito all studied there. Tomohito's daughter Princess Akiko is currently at the prestigious university.
