LINZ, Austria(AFP) — Italian rider Stefano Garzelli won the 16th stage of the Tour of Italy here on Tuesday for his second victory in this year's edition.
The 33-year-old's compatriot Danilo Di Luca retained the overall leader's pink jersey, despite coming in some eight minutes adrift of the winner, who also won the 14th stage on Saturday.
Garzelli made his move 31km from the finish, having joined a small group of escapees at the foot of the third category climb of Bannberg and seamlessly went on to record his sixth career win in the race.
Overall winner in 2000 Garzelli contents himself these days in focussing on stage wins, having lost 15 minutes in Sunday's stage.
Garzelli said that he was satisfied with his tour.
