Bush nominates Army veteran for international Treasury post

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush has nominated a new pointman to head the Treasury department's international affairs, former Army officer David McCormick, the White House said Thursday.

Bush had nominated Tim Ryan to the post in late February, but the Treasury said Ryan had asked for his nomination to be withdrawn several weeks ago.

McCormick's appointment has to be approved by Congress before he can take up the Treasury post, which would mark a short move from his current post next door at the White House.

A veteran of the first Gulf war, McCormick is currently working as a deputy assistant to Bush and an adviser on national security and international economic affairs after holding a prior post at the Department of Commerce.
