Spanish probe claims US firm lied about treasure wreck

MADRID (AFP) — A Spanish probe into a treasure-laden shipwreck discovered by a US company has found the firm lied about its location, which is in the Mediterranean and not the Atlantic, a newspaper said Thursday.

The Odyssey deep-sea explorer company on May 18 announced the discovery of the world's biggest maritime treasure trove in international waters, somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

The ship, codenamed "Black Swan", sank with roughly half a million silver and gold coins on board, as well as other artefacts, Odyssey said.

Spain, which ordered a probe into the discovery and filed a claim in a US court, found the claim that the wreck was discovered in the Atlantic Ocean was "absolutely false," the ABC daily said.
