Versatility the key, says rugby coach Laporte

MARCOUSSIS, France (AFP) — France coach Bernard Laporte said Thursday that versatility played a key role in his selection process for the Rugby World Cup, which France will host this September and October.

Laporte dropped Pascal Pape from the 30-man squad in favour of Sebastien Chabal, the long-haired Sale number eight who, off the field, was one France's most in demand players during the recent two-test tour of New Zealand.

"It's painful leaving Pascal Pape on the sidelines," said Laporte.

"Since his back injury (in March 2006) Pascal has struggled to reach the top form he had during the 2004 (Six Nations) tournament. Maybe he's not working hard enough."
